Choosing what to do with your baby's ashes

It can be a confusing, distressing and overwhelming time trying to make the right decision around what happens to your baby's cremated remains. Some parents know soon after the loss and make a quick and clear decision while others take time to decide what is right for them. There is no right or wrong answer, and you can take as long as you need.

A lasting way to remember your baby is to have a portion or all of their ashes placed inside an exquisitely handcrafted porcelain cremation urn. These urns are beautiful to hold and provide an enduring way to honour and celebrate your baby’s life, no matter how short.

Keeping your baby’s ashes:

Some parents choose to keep their baby’s ashes together in the one urn. Others choose to keep a small portion, for example a tablespoon amount as a keepsake and place this in one of our urns.

Scattering your baby’s ashes:

Some parents choose to scatter all their baby’s ashes or keep a small portion and scatter the remainder in a meaningful place that has significance to them.

Interring your baby’s ashes:

Other parents choose to inter their baby’s ashes. Interring ashes is the process of placing cremated remains in a permanent resting place for example in a cemetery, a niche wall, a mausoleum or buried in a private garden or woodland.

It is still possible to keep a portion of your baby’s ashes for any of these three options.

Choosing a baby urn

Our urns blend in naturally and beautifully to your home environment and do not look like a 'typical' urn - more like a piece of art or sculpture.

It is a very personal decision when choosing the type of urn to place your precious baby or infant's ashes in. Try to imagine where you might want your baby's ashes placed - will you want to hold the pebble or heart in your hand or keep in your handbag, or might you want to see it every day on a shelf or table in your home perhaps surrounded by other precious items ...

Depending on the volume of your baby's ashes and after discussions with me, you will be able to decide which option is most meaningful to you.

Choosing the right urn size

It is important to note that when deciding on the size of our urns, it is the volume in millilitres of the remaining ashes which is important, rather than your baby’s birth weight.

You may like to consider the following:

1. Would you like all of your baby’s ashes in the one urn?

2.. Would you like to divide the ashes into several different sized urns (such as in several different pebbles/hearts)?

3. Would you like a portion of ashes placed inside the urn (as a keepsake urn)?

I can assist you with this difficult decision.

As a general rule,

a pregnancy loss in the first trimester may result in a very small amount of ash (up to 1 tablespoon)
a pre-term baby in the second trimester may need up to a 250ml sized urn
a full-term baby would typically need up to a 500ml sized urn

You may however choose any of our urns to place a portion of the ashes inside.

We have small, medium and large urn sizes, designed for different purposes. These are available as heart or pebble shaped.

The small urns are designed to fit in your pocket, in the small of your hand or a bag so you can keep your baby's ashes close. These will contain just a small portion of ashes (up to a tablespoon).

The medium urn size can be both for display and to hold in your two palms. Depending on the amount of ashes, this can contain all or a portion of the ashes.

The large size urn is more suited to positioning on a mantle or table for display and depending on the amount of ashes, can hold all or a portion of the ashes.

Please note that each clay urn is made by hand. Temperature, the nature of clay and its properties means that shape and size may differ for each item made.

Dimensions:

Small pebble: 4 x 3 x 1.5cm & holds approx. 1 teaspoon of ash

Medium pebble (flat-ish): 9 x 8 x 3cm & holds approx 50mls of ash

Medium pebble (concave): 8 x 7 x 4cm & holds approx 50mls of ash

Large pebble: 13 x 12 x 3.5cm & holds approx 150mls of ash

Small heart: 6 x6 x 3.5mls & holds approx 30mls of ash

Medium heart: 12 x 12 x 5.5cm & holds approx 150mls of ash (with silk pouch) or approx 250mls (no silk pouch)

Large heart: 14 x 14 x 7.5cm & holds approx 450mls of ash (with silk pouch) or approx 500mls (no silk pouch)

For parents of an infant or child

Any of our urns would be suitable however please note that this would mean only a portion of ashes (up to 500mls), and not the complete amount, would be placed inside the urn as a keepsake urn.

For Adult Ashes

Any of our urns would be suitable however please note that this would mean only a portion of ashes (up to 500mls), and not the complete amount, would be placed inside the urn as a keepsake urn.

For Pet Ashes

Any of our urns would be suitable however dependent on the size of your pet, either the full ashes or a portion of ashes (up to 500mls), would be placed inside the urn.

Pricing

Pebble urns: $120 small, $300 medium, $420 large.

Heart urns: $180 small, $350 medium, $480 large.

Lettering is done by hand - each individual letter is imprinted on to the clay and is an additional cost of $5 per letter.

Postage with Sendle or Australia Post is an additional fee dependent on weight.

Pick up from my studio in Highett, Melbourne is also possible.
