  • What size urn will I need to order?
The staff at the funeral home you liaised with, may be able to assist you with this information. The amount of ash produced can vary greatly as it is dependent on a few different factors. It is important I know the ash volume in milliliters before making the urn. *Please know that it is the volume (in millilitres) of your baby's ashes following their cremation that is important, not your baby's birth weight. If you are unable to provide me with the above information, you may consider the following: Take the ashes to the funeral director who organised the cremation & ask them to measure the ashes Measure the ashes yourself in to a measuring jug and advise me of the amount Bring the ashes to me in Highett, Melbourne and I can measure them (there is an additional charge of $45 for me to measure) Send the ashes by courier or registered post to me and I can measure them (there is an additional of $45 for me to measure) Take a photo of the ashes and send the photo to me so I can estimate the appropriate size urn. I understand the options above might be difficult for you to do and I am happy to guide you to ensure the least amount of distress occurs. Sometimes a friend or family member might be able to support you to do this challenging task. Sizing: It is important you consider whether you would like all of your baby’s ashes in the one urn, or whether you would divide them (please see "Information: To Help Inform Your Decision' on our Urn Designs' tab on our home page). As a general rule, the loss of a baby: in the first trimester may produce approximately a teaspoon or up to a tablespoon (and sometimes more). a pre-term baby in the second trimester, may need up to a 250ml sized urn a full-term baby would typically need up to a 500ml sized urn Pebble Urns are available in a small, medium or large size. Dimensions: Small pebble: 4 x 3 x 1.5cm & holds approx 1 teaspoon of ash Medium pebble (flat-ish): 9 x 8 x 3cm & holds approx 50mls of ash Medium pebble (concave): 8 x 7 x 4cm & holds approx 50mls of ash Large pebble: 13 x 12 x 3.5cm & holds approx 150mls of ash Heart Urns are available in a small, medium or large size. Dimensions: Small heart: 6 x6 x 3.5mls & holds approx 30mls of ash Medium heart: 12 x 12 x 5.5cm & holds approx 150mls of ash (with silk pouch) or approx 250mls (no silk pouch) Large heart: 14 x 14 x 7.5cm & holds approx 450mls of ash (with silk pouch) or approx 500mls of ash (no silk pouch) Please note: * You may choose any of our urns to place a portion (not all) of the ashes inside. * Each clay urn is made by hand. At the base of each urn is an opening which is secured with a rubber stopper. Some of the stoppers are glued if I feel it is necessary. The larger urns have a silk pouch* with a drawstring tie and the ashes are held within this silk pouch with a rubber stopper. You can place the ashes directly into the urn with any of our urns however, extreme care must be taken when moving the urn. *we try to use recycled materials wherever possible.
